National Patient Safety Day

PATIENT SAFETY DAY: FRIDAY, JULY 25, 2008

Long Island

Please save the date:

Date - July 25th 2008
Time - 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Place - South Nassau Unitarian Universalist Congregation,
228 South Ocean Ave. Freeport LI NY
What - Patient Safety Day. People who have experienced a medical error, live with an injury or lost a family member from their medical care, and those who care about patient safety are invited to an evening of sharing, caring and friendship.

Speakers:

Leslie Farrington, MD: Dr. Farrington has been an OB-GYN for over 20 years. The death of her own mother and other personal experiences have caused her to reassess how our healthcare system affects people’s lives. Dr. Farrington will share how her own experiences have influenced how she practices medicine and advocates for her patients and her own family.

Leslie Tasca: In 2006 the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Unit of a major Long Island hospital was closed by Order of New York State due to the same issues raised a few years earlier by this Long Island mother concerned about the lack of competent care for her daughter. Before the 2006 closing, many children and their families suffered from a pediatric cardiac surgery program that did not have a full time surgeon. Fortunately, four families had the wisdom to transfer to another hospital and saved their children's lives. No one knows how many children failed to survive.

Patsy Turrini: Patsy Turrini’s husband died after being sedated at a Long Island hospital following a stroke. A number of reports indicate that the medication the hospital used can cause acute cardiac arrest in persons with compromised brain problems - such as stroke. Patsy is now developing a manual of calming techniques that can be used by family members instead of drugs or restraints. Patsy Turrini, a Long Island resident, began the original Mothers’ Center Model, and is a clinical social work psychoanalyst practicing in Merrick, NY.

Come hear their stories and other stories of courage by families faced with medical treatment that falls short of accepted standards. Learn how families are using their experiences to help others avoid similar tragedies. For more information or to RSVP call (516) 579-4711.

Following the program there will be a candle lighting ceremony.
Please feel free to bring a refreshment to share

National Patient Safety Day Vigil -- July 25 Luna's Light is sponsoring the National Patient Safety Day Vigil on Friday, July 25 at 7pm located in the gazebo behind Lyndhurst City Hall at 5301 Mayfield Road. Held every July 25, the Vigil honors those who are making a difference in patient safety. We also remember the hundred of thousands of Americans who have died from medical complications and adverse events, including our sister Shannon McBride, who passed away due to complications after a tonsillectomy in 2003. This year, we are fundraising to support local patient safety initiatives.
