What - Patient Safety Day. People who have experienced a medical error, live with an injury or lost a family member from their medical care, and those who care about patient safety are invited to an evening of sharing, caring and friendship.
Speakers:
Leslie Farrington, MD: Dr. Farrington has been an OB-GYN for over 20 years. The death of her own mother and other personal experiences have caused her to reassess how our healthcare system affects people’s lives. Dr. Farrington will share how her own experiences have influenced how she practices medicine and advocates for her patients and her own family.
Leslie Tasca: In 2006 the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Unit of a major Long Island hospital was closed by Order of New York State due to the same issues raised a few years earlier by this Long Island mother concerned about the lack of competent care for her daughter. Before the 2006 closing, many children and their families suffered from a pediatric cardiac surgery program that did not have a full time surgeon. Fortunately, four families had the wisdom to transfer to another hospital and saved their children's lives. No one knows how many children failed to survive.
Patsy Turrini: Patsy Turrini’s husband died after being sedated at a Long Island hospital following a stroke. A number of reports indicate that the medication the hospital used can cause acute cardiac arrest in persons with compromised brain problems - such as stroke. Patsy is now developing a manual of calming techniques that can be used by family members instead of drugs or restraints. Patsy Turrini, a Long Island resident, began the original Mothers’ Center Model, and is a clinical social work psychoanalyst practicing in Merrick, NY.
