6 Month Series for Patient's Advocates and Care Partners
The PULSE Patient Safety Advisory Council will be bringing to the community on the first Wednesday of each month from 1:00 – 3:00 PM, important topics related to patient safety and patient centered care. If you have ever offered to help someone who is sick, injured, elderly or in need of support for their sick family member, questions you may have will be answered during this six month series offered free to anyone who calls themselves a patient’s advocate.

About the Campaign
The One & Only Campaign is a public health campaign, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Safe Injection Practices Coalition (SIPC), to raise awareness among patients and healthcare providers about safe injection practices. The campaign aims to eradicate outbreaks resulting from unsafe injection practices.
About Mary Beth Wenger
For nearly three years, Mary Beth Wenger has served as the NYS Department of Health Project Coordinator/Capacity Building Coordinator for the New York One & Only Campaign, a federal-grant-funded effort aimed at ensuring that every injection in healthcare is a safe injection. Ms. Wenger serves on the Safe Injection Practices Coalition’s (SIPC) Steering Committee, the SIPC Messaging Work group, and the SIPC Coalition Expansion Workgroup. She has presented on the topic of injection safety and the New York One & Only Campaign for the National Public Health Information Coalition (NPHIC), moderated an injection safety forum for “Public Health Live,” an international satellite broadcast seen by 5,800 viewers, via the University at Albany School of Public Health; and hosted and co-produced a patient safety video called “Your Best Shot At Safety: Having a Conversation About Safe Medical Injections With Your Provider.”Printable FlierMay 2, 2012
A Conversation with Suzanne Mattei, Director of New Yorkers for Patient & Family Empowerment
New Yorkers for Patient & Family Empowerment is a patient-centered campaign to promote greater transparency and safety in healthcare, a joint project of the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) and the Center for Justice & Democracy. Suzanne has 30 years of experience in public interest law and policy. She produced in-depth reports exposing the health impacts suffered by the 9/11 responders and area residents from the pollution aftermath of the World Trade Center attack and the federal government’s failure to address them.

Advanced Directives; Living Wills and Healthcare Proxy, what are they and how do we talk to our family about them. With National Healthcare Decisions Day on April 16, 2012 Long Island Patient Safety Advisory Council is hosting a discussion on Advanced Directives.Patricia Mulholland, RN, has been Administrator of a Home care agency for over 30 years, a Hospice Care Network volunteer and for over 10 years on the Board of Trustees. She is a member of PULSE Patient Safety Advisory Council, a Standardized Patient for Hofstra NSLIJ Medical School, and a member of the Port Washington Health Advisory Board.
Ms. Mulholland is an expert at treating patients at the end of their life and will discuss advanced directives including Living Wills, Healthcare Proxies and ways of starting that conversation with the people who are important to you.

Her broad knowledge of Medicaid guidelines, Retirement and Estate Planning, and Insurance options, combined with her awareness of available community resources, make her invaluable to her clients and their families.

"HIPAA Everything You Want to Know About Patient Privacy but Are Afraid to Ask" Greg Radinsky, vice president and chief corporate compliance officer for the 15-hospital North Shore-LIJ Health System, will present a program, “ HIPAA: Everything You Wanted to Know about Patient Privacy but Are Afraid to Ask.” Geared for patient advocates, family members and the general public, Mr. Radinsky will discuss the role of HIPAA as it relates to patient safety and how to access medical records. A question and answer session will follow.
Mr. Radinsky is responsible for overseeing the compliance programs at North Shore-LIJ’s hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, hospice, laboratory, and other related entities. Mr.Radinsky began his career as a fraud and abuse attorney for the Office of Inspector General for the U.S Department of Health and Human Services
(OIG) where he coordinated with the U.S. Department of Justice, state attorneys general, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and other government agencies on
civil and criminal healthcare fraud matters. He was selected to receive the prestigious OIG Exceptional Achievement Award, OIG Cooperative Achievement Award, and the United States Department of Health and Human Services Regional Director’s Leadership Award for his work.
January 4, 2012: Understanding Health Insurance by Stacy Villagran, Director, Facilitated Enrollment Program, Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council, Inc.Stacy Villagran is theprogram director for the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council’s Facilitated Enrollment Program. This is a New York State Department of Health grant-funded program designed to offer eligible individuals assistance with their Medicaid, Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus insurance program applications.
Consistently rated as one of the top performing programs by the state health department, in terms of accuracy and individuals served, Stacy and her team of enrollers are adept at understanding and navigating the nuances of the enrollment and filing processes that occur at the local county departments of social services. She and her staff recently expanded their expertise to include services on behalf of the Community Health Advocates Program, sponsored by the Community Service Society of New York.
