Pharmacy Students Manouchkathe Cassagnol, Assistant Clinical Professor St. John’s School of Pharmacy
PULSE hosts “Brown Bag It” events for community members at local Libraries where pharmacy professors field questions on medication safety. Pharmacy students shadow their teachers as part of their training. Following the exchanges, PULSE offers suggestions about improving communication including body language.
Health Literacy for the Spanish-speaker Mirna Cortes-Obers, Community Development Organizer Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN) and Dr. Cesar M. Garces MICU/CCU Social Worker
Available are wallet cards in Spanish to inform consumers about their right to a translator during hospital stays. This collaboration also produced films in English and Spanish outlining the importance of advanced directives and trained patient-safety advocates. Patient-safety education in Spanish is available through CARECEN and the PSAC.
Adults with Disabilities Susan McCormadi, Program Director Long Island Center for Independent Living
Focus groups for people with disabilities to understand the needs of people with disabilities while hospitalized. Educational programs and video testimonials. Advocacy training available for families of the people with disabilities. Working with Nassau Suffolk Hospital Council to expand on services.
End of Life Conversations Patricia Mulholland, RN Hospice Care Network
Information available for conversations about end-of-life care with family members, friends and medical professionals. Speaker available on the importance of the needs of patients and their families during the final stages of life. This is not only for Hospice patients. Special attention is encouraged for healthy conversations. Prepare for National Healthcare Decisions Day. Also addressing the safe handling and storage of medication in the home.
Patients with Mental Disabilities and their Caregivers Arlene Reith Parent Advocate
Training developed for professional caregivers and the family of mentally-challenged children to enable them to work more closely with medical teams and participate in healthcare decisions and understand patient safety partnerships.
Youth and Adults / Medication Abuse Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D Executive Director L.I. Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
Teen and adult focus groups to address the rise in prescription drug overdoses on Long Island. The groups focus is on a trend among teenagers who are buying heroin with the money they make selling their parents’ medication. PULSE and LICADD are also working with North Shore LIJ Health System to explore possible responses to this troubling trend. The PSAC is developing tools for hospital staff who do the discharge, in the areas of informing patients information about the prescribed medication to include:
- If medication can be addicting,
- Proper storage and the proper disposal of unused medication so medications will not fall into the wrong hands.. Full paper available upon request (October 2010)
Transgender Community Donna Riley, LMSW Executive Director Trans Solidarity Project PULSE sponsored a series of focus groups with transgender men and women to learn about their unique needs and to identify the challenges they face in the healthcare system. PULSE accompanied transgender patients to surgeries and doctors’ visits to learn more about their special needs. Full paper available upon request. Working closely with The Joint Commission LGBT work group. Preparing a "dictionary" of appropriate and most used transgender terms, video testimonials.
