Meet our newest members, August 2011: Literacy Nassau, and ParkerJewish Institute
The Patient Safety Advisory Council is an independent group of community leaders developed to incorporate patient safety into their organizations and programs. This council was developed by PULSE of NY with support from North Shore LIJ Health System, Nassau Suffolk Hospital Council and the Long Island Community Foundation. Additional support has come from The Cautious Patient Foundation. Members of the Council include representation from disease-specific organizations and diverse socio-cultural groups. The primary objective of this council is to learn, from the grassroots, what these community leaders feel is needed to address patient safety. Additionally, they will be able to acquire knowledge and tools to pass on to their constituents in order to fulfill the following goals: 1) patients will be better prepared to advocate for themselves and their family members, 2) communication between the community and local health systems will be improved, 3) lessons learned will be passed on to improve patient safety in local healthcare settings.
The Council is an independent representation of community organization’s to be used to improve health literacy and teach patient safety and communication skills, and to change the “culture” of patient safety.
New members may begin any time but usually run from August through July.
