BROWN BAG IT NEW YORK!
Back by Popular Demand!

Wantagh Public Library 3285 Park Ave. Wantagh, NY 11793
Meet with pharmacists and discuss you medication.  One on one.

WHAT ARE PATIENTS LEARNING WHEN LEAVING THE HOSPITAL?
What should patients be told, if anything, when prescribed narcotics?

Date:
Tuesday night August 10, and Tuesday August 17, 2010  (join us for one or both evenings)

Time:
7:00 PM

Where: Wantagh Public Library, 3285 Park Avenue Wantagh, NY 11793

Why: Long Island Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency (LICADD) and PULSE Patient Safety Advisory Council are working to reduce the drug problem on Long Island through education of medication use and drug storage and disposal.

For two weeks a PULSE intern shadowed doctors during the patient discharge process at a Long Island Hospital. The focus was to observe the dialogue between the patient and doctor during the discharge process.  While observing the discharge, PULSE intern Sarah Solomon was listening for questions by the medical professional regarding the types of medications that were being prescribed, the disposal and storage of these medications, and the potential addictions that can occur from the abuse of painkillers and narcotics.  Her observations have led her to the conclusion that possible methods of disposal, storage, as well as the potential addictions of painkillers are not being addressed during the discharge process or medication distribution process.

How can this be changed?  Your participation is needed – your voice counts!

For more information or to reserve your place for an interactive discussion, call (516) 579-4711.
