Coming to Freeport, Long Island: Amy Wilson-Stronks & Dr. Terri Ann Parnell

Sunday, September 25, 2011

Amy is a national leader in health disparities work. Her research and writings focus on issues that impact patient-provider communication and patient-centeredness including language access, cultural barriers, health literacy, vulnerable populations and the unique needs of the LGBT community.

Amy will educate on recent policy and advocacy activities, and through engaged discussion we will share real stories and human experiences that express the healthcare needs, challenges, and perspectives of minority and LGBT communities.   These stories will help shape ongoing national and local dialogue about ways to improve the quality and safety of healthcare and promote health equity.

Amy is an independent advocate, consultant, and researcher dedicated to promoting health equity through research, policy and practice. Amy has dedicated her professional career to working collaboratively with health care organizations, researchers, consultants, advocates and patients to implement concrete, evidence-based measures to improve access to care for individuals and families navigating the health care system.  During her twelve year tenure at The Joint Commission, she was able to promote principles, practices, and eventually accreditation standards that support effective communication, cultural competence, and patient-and family-centered care.
